Throughout this month I have been absorbed in my kitchen. Part of the reason for this was due to a Christmas present.... a cooking course. Don't worry, it wasn't a hint, but rather a fulfilled Christmas wish.
I had been finding for some time that I was in a rut with my meal plans, and thought that it would be nice to do something different. So I have spent the last couple of weeks making gorgeous pasta bakes, Morrocan tagine with couscous, pastry with walnuts which was then fashioned into a delicious quiche, and my all time favourite....ever ... honeycombe icecream.
It was such a pleasure to do the course, although a little more stressful than I would have expected! There were so many benefits: I learnt some new techniques, got some fresh ideas for meals and used ingrediants I would not have thought of. And I made icecream for the first time ever... and it was so easy and incredibly delicious. But I also learnt that I am not cut out for a career in the kitchen. I had a glimmer of what it must feel like to be on Masterchief and it is soooo not for me.
So why is it that the pictures here don't seem to match what I said I was cooking on the course? Well, another benefit was I was inspired to have a look at some ingrediants I had in the cupboard, and dust off some cook books. And I made a lot of other things, particularly vegetable bakes and other winter favourites. But the most successful of all of these (after the icecream of course which was not around long enough to photograph) was the pecan pie. It was utterly delicious although a ridiculously indulgent thing to make when there is no special occassion to make it for, and for just two of us to share. And I finally strained and bottled my rhubarb vodka.... something to enjoy on a night when I need something a bit stronger.
